Meet Stu!

Stu came to Longmeadow as a stud last winter. He was underweight and did not have much experience being handled. After lots of groundwork training and a routine castration, along with all other medical care, this stud-turned-gelding is now ready for adoption!

It took a long time for Stu to be safely led to and from his turnout. In the beginning, he had the habit of rearing when feeling any type of pressure from the halter. We can't blame him - he wasn't introduced to a halter until he was ten years old! But for a stud with no previous training, we think he picked up on everything pretty quickly. When he learned that a halter wasn't too bad, it made his groundwork training much easier. While he is still learning to accept oral meds and stand nicely for our farrier, he is coming around quite nicely in other parts of his training! He is good for trailer loading and doesn't mind standing tied. He really enjoys the company of his equine friends and is working on becoming more independent when away from them. He gets along well with both mares and geldings, but his adopter should be reminded that he was gelded at 10, so his stud-like tendencies still come out at times. He has never been aggressive towards other horses or humans, however, so with some extra training we think he'd do well in many different herds!

Stu still tends to be on the nervous side but has come such a far way from the man he was when he first arrived. He has not been started under saddle here at the Ranch and will need an advanced adopter and professional trainer to continue his training if he is adopted as a riding horse. This 10-year-old Thoroughbred has a full life ahead of him and we can't wait to see where life takes him!

Adoption Fee: $700
