Meet Maggie, a two-year goofball with the world’s largest smile. Her affection is clear and contagious. Wanting to be beside you to keep you company, she wants to be right there with you (but she’s also great at playing independent with herself). Belly rubs or butt scratches, affection is her love language.

Maggie loves to play, loving to chase after a ball or a Kong toy. If she could hang out outside on a nice day, she would. Based on our interactions with her, she has no problem with letting you take toys or food away. While she loves to play, she’s also content to chill on the couch with you. She’s a great medium-energy dog. Occasionally, when she gets very excited, she might jump to put her paws on you, however, she’s not a big jumper.

She’s completely housetrained, not needing to be let out overnight. Right now, she’s working on her crate training, and she’s made great progress since she’s been in foster. That being said, she can be left alone in a room without being crated; she’s been perfectly fine alone, not showing any destructive tendencies. She does know “sit,” “stay,” and “shake.”

While she’s been at her foster home, she’s been working on building her confidence. She wants to please you and takes correction well; her ideal fur-ever parents and/or dog-siblings will be confident as she looks to them for cues. But don’t let her fool you; she’s very smart, quickly learning commands and her daily routines.

She’s dog-friendly, but she will need slower introductions in neutral territory. So far, she’s become best friends with our resident male pit bull, and they love to play together outside. She’s shown amazing body language, especially as she initiates play. With all the other dogs she’s come in contact with, she’s shown positive body language. On walks at the South End rail trial or Freedom Park, she’s done very well. She wants to meet other dogs, but never has lunged or barked at them. In a busy, over-stimulating walking location, she’s a strong girl who will pull on leash; however, on a more relaxed walk, she’s right beside you.

She did meet a cat indoors, and after staring at it for a few seconds, she was called away, and she left it alone, which was a promising sign.

She rides in the car well, whether in a crate or in the back. We’ve been on several trips over two hours with her, and there was no barking or whining. She settled in and quickly fell asleep.

Other volunteers at the shelter noted that she did exceptionally well with their 11, 12, and 13-year-old kids, saying that she had a gentle and fun personality. On walks, she’s met other younger children, and she loved getting all the pets and attention from them.
