Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
Canelo is a gentle older fella who is as sweet as they come. He came to the shelter with a smaller dog and reportedly also did with other large dogs in his prior home. Canelo spent a couple of weeks in a foster home- here’s what we learned:

- Canelo is housebroken
- He walks politely on leash and is not reactive to other dogs
- He met several kids and loved getting pets from them
- He knows several basic commands
- He rides well in the car
- He is eager to please, lovable, and affectionate
- He loves belly rubs
- He is equal parts active and couch potato and enjoys daily walks and even hikes
- He is comfortable with handling, including being brushed and having his nails trimmed

“Canelo is such a doll. Everyone we have met so far has found him adorable and sweet. Definite lab characteristics. Canelo is a wonderful dog.”

Here’s what Canelo’s friends at the shelter have said:

“I met Canelo for the first time this week, after his return from a foster break. He is such a sweet, gentle big baby. Easy to leash up and easy to walk. He is very uncertain and nervous in the shelter environment, and probably missing his home and the little buddy he came in with. When we returned to his kennel, I spent some time petting him. He seems to take comfort in touch and having someone nearby. He even flopped down and offered his belly. It absolutely broke my heart to walk away and leave him alone. I hope this sweet boy finds a new forever home soon.”

“I met Canelo today and found him to be a big, sweet, easygoing, loving marshmallow. What a gentle giant! He`s shy and overwhelmed at the shelter but once you go slow and easy with him, he definitely shows that he wants attention and wants to be loved. He was easy to leash up and walks very nicely with a loose leash. He`s a very calm, well-behaved boy who needs someone who can go slow with him and give him a chance to build his confidence and learn what love is all about.”

Canelo seems to have been kept outdoors in his prior home of two years, so one requirement for his future home is that he be welcomed inside to be with his family. Canelo has been tolerant and independent when meeting other dogs in playgroup and may benefit from having a calm friend to keep him company in his future home. Please ask to meet Canelo today!
