Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
Hermes made Longmeadow news when she arrived to the Ranch in the beginning of 2023. She was part of the Benton County rescue – a group of horses that came to us covered in burs and infested with parasites. They all needed dental care, hoof care, and overall medical care. Hermes had a vendetta against humans upon her arrival, and we couldn’t blame her. After all of the neglect she had faced, it was no wonder why she didn’t trust any of our staff or volunteers at first. It took her a while to come around, but after a lot of patience and love, Hermes learned to trust Longmeadow staff and the groundwork team enough to begin her halter training. Thanks to our skilled employees and volunteers, Hermes was eventually safe enough to be handled and examined by our vets.

After a routine pregnancy check, we found Hermes was pregnant and due within the next few months! Due to the neglect she had faced and the stress she had been put through, we weren’t sure her foal would make it. We hoped for the best and waited, until one night, little Prada made her way into the world as a healthy, happy baby! After months of caring for her baby and being such an amazing mother, Prada was weaned and has since been adopted! After he motherly duties were finished, she could begin her evaluation stage.

Upon evaluation, our trainer found that Hermes was likely started under saddle at some point in her life. She would wear a saddle and take a bridle with no problems, and understood the basic concepts of halting and some steering while on the ground. Since she was not completely comfortable with our trainer riding her, we decided that it was both hers and our best interest to be restarted completely.

Hermes will need an advanced rider and handler to correct negative behaviors as they arise in her future training. She is still working on trusting humans, but Hermes is very intelligent and catches on quickly to correction and commands. She stands tied very well and is currently working on standing well for the farrier. Hermes is a beautiful mare who came to us with a hardened heart, and we understand why. She has progressed so well and would make an amazing horse for an adopter with patience and a love for rescued animals.
