Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
Once you in Opie's inner circle, he is the most loving, sweet, gentle dog. He has your back and will be your loyal and fierce defender for life. Sadly, Opie lost his family due to COVID-19. His owner lost his job, and then his house, and then his dog. He had to move to an apartment out of state, and could not afford to pay all the fees needed to keep Opie. Opie grew up outside in a yard and learned to live independently. He also learned to be extremely protective of his property. Unfortunately, this means he is vary wary of strangers and often views them as a threat. So in turn, he will bark, growl, lunge, and try to bite at strangers whenever he is behind a fence or on a leash.
06/28/20 21:56 Staff reported on 6/16 that a volunteer from spcaLA offered a treat to Opie from a distance. The treat was given to him on the ground, he took the treat off the ground. Opie lunged, was barking and snapping at staff member who was holding a camera tripod. This was witnessed by LBACS staff/volunteers. Decided to set date for Opie due to unpredictable behavior that poses a risk to the public. SDAINS
