Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
Reuben came to Longmeadow in August 2017. He was emaciated and we were concerned that he wouldn't survive his severe neglect. He is a strong horse and he pulled through. He is an older gentleman. He has about as many teeth left in his mouth as a 2 year old human. He can no longer eat hay but enjoys his senior mash and alfalfa chops. He is also blind in his left eye but he seems to have compensated very well. He doesn't act fearful on that side.
Reuben is trained for riding. He has a forward moving walk and an adorable little trot jog. He is working on improving his fitness. Since he is an older gentleman we are looking for a retirement home for him, but one that will keep him active.
He is currently being fed a few times a day and after the winter we will work on decreasing him to 2 feedings per day. It is very important that his adopter understand that he is a senior horse with special dietary needs. He will always need senior grain, supplemented with chopped forage. He can graze in a pasture on grass but should never have access to baled hay.
Adoption fee: $200
Height: 15.2 HH
Max carrying weight (includes rider and tack): 217 lbs.
Adoptable animals can be seen by appointment only!
