Dog came in very nervous and shut down in kennel. I had to get him for a check up with the vet and it took at least 10-15 minutes to get him to come to me enough to leave the kennel. Was still very nervous during check up but was never aggressive. Rufus has been getting taken out of his kennel for his twice daily ear medication and he does very well with it. When taking him out, he can be a bit tough to leash but does not attempt any biting or niping behavior. when out in the yard, he is still high energy at first but calms down and seeks attention from handler. Able to complete full handling and he laid out his belly for me. Returning to his kennel has become a bit of a challenge as he does not like it there and will throw himself away from kennel door as much as possible. able to pick up and put in kennel and dog does not try to run out or get defensive in kennel. Suggest training for returning to kennel due to not everyone being able to/feel safe to pick up -AN

Rufus is very high energy while in his kennel and will throw himself against the kennel door making it difficult to open doors safetly. As soon as he is leashed, he gets a bit loud and riled up when the other dogs in the room start to lunge or bark at him. After getting him out of the room, Rufus walks very eagerly until he is able to potty-- afterwards he walks very well on the leash. I did not experience any tugging and only used minimal redirection to get him to walk on a certain path. He shows interest in the dogs in the courtyard kennels and will walk away when they are getting loud/or barking. I was able to do full handling on Rufus, when he is completely comfortable and relaxed he lay himself out and allow belly rubs. When putting Rufus back into his kennel, he was hesitant and refusing (I also believe the other dog's barking made him feel nervous), but as soon as I offered treats, I was able to walk into the kennel with him, shut the door behind me, gave him treats and left the kennel. Suggest using some treats to return him into his kennel. Reason for taking Rufus out of his kennel was for PRIDE staff cleaning.

Today I: Took a ride in a car, which made me nervous, but then I went on a long walk with my new friends. We saw dogs and people and bikes and cars, but none of that bothered me. I was having too much fun walking and sniffing! After the big walk we went in the car again, then to a place that had soooo many things to sniff! I walked quietly and slowly around and got to take my time checking out everything. After that, getting in the car was easier because my friends helped me to not be as nervous.

Three Words to Describe Me are: Careful – Stoic - Gentle
Notes from My Walker: Rufus is a fantastic boy! He walks beautifully on leash, directly at the walker’s side and does not pull at all. He takes his time sniffing, and shares messages, but does not mark nearly as much as expected for an unaltered male. He is nervous getting into and out of the car, but with some gentle words and coaxing, he gets in, sits nicely, and gets out. He did jump in one of the times, so he seems to be getting the hang of it! At Pet Food Express he had a lovely time checking out all of the smells in the store and was not intimidated by new people or barking dogs. Rufus is a gentleman who deserves a home where he can get regular exercise and be the companion dog he is meant to be.
