Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
My name is Duke and I am a black & white pit bull/australian cattle dog. I am a neutered male and I am 5 years old. I was transferred here from the Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control shelter through the Ames Animal Shelter's Third Chance program on 05/04/2024. The Cedar Rapids shelter was very full for dogs, and asked if another shelter had room for me, so here I am at the Ames shelter now! They were sad to see me go. They said this about me: "Duke is a staff favorite. He is sweet as can be, calm and incredibly affectionate. Knows basic skills and will make a great companion for someone. Does well with other dogs but doesn’t want to play much, just ignores in playgroups after a few play bows. To our knowledge, has not been with kids but no issues in temp test that would alarm us."

I am potty trained. I am a medium energy dog and I can live with an owner with no prior pet owning experience. I already know some tricks, but I would do well with continued obedience training to help us bond and for us to learn how to communicate with each other. I can be good with men, women, and children. I can be good with other dogs, and the shelter staff will temperament test me with cats if an applicant has cats in the home.

All dogs are tested for heartworms and given flea preventatives. They are also tested for intestinal parasites and receive routine dewormings. Dogs are vaccinated against distemper, rabies, and bordetella, spayed/neutered before adoption, and have a microchip. Adoption fees include the initial automated registration of the microchip at the time of adoption.
